JULIAN’S HISTORY COMES TO LIFE
Julian history comes to
life on Sundays from 12 to 4 p.m. You will see the Julian Doves &
Desperados, Julian’s own re-enactment group roaming the streets of the
historic down town area. Authentically dressed in early western attire
dating from the late 1800s, the years gold was discovered and mined from our
local mountains. The group also performs a variety of historic comedy
skits at their stage area between the Julian Market & Deli and Cabbages
and Kings, located near the intersection of Main Street and Washington.
This group of locals and honorary locals reminds us of how we were, way
back then. The lady’s characters are Molly Scott, the
lady-about-town and Gypsie Davenporte,
the town businesswoman madam. The gents in the group represent
several characters drawn straight from Julian history books. The dapper
Doc Hopkins owned one of the more popular saloons in town. Captain Cooper, repeatedly mistaken for Buffalo
Bill, may have drifted with Julian’s Confederate founders as they came
west after the Civil War. Other characters have come from the
imagination of their re-enactors. Snake Julian can be a gunfighter
or the judge (with his top hat and frock coat, some whisper he’s the
undertaker).
You will enjoy meeting the
colorful characters and watching any or all of the original skits
presented at 1:00, 2:00, and 3:00 PM. Please, come and join in the fun
and revelry of the era. You are encouraged to bring your camera to record
your trip back in time.
